Earlier today, U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense Bob Work and Icelandic Minister for Foreign Affairs Lilja Alfreðsdóttir signed a Joint Declaration between the Department of Defense of the United States of America and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Iceland in order to facilitate future cooperation.
In signing the Joint Declaration, Deputy Secretary Work and Minister Alfreðsdóttir agreed that the United States and Iceland will retain a resilient defense plan for Iceland, maintain reliable arrangements for timely and effective communications in times of emergency, continue senior-level and expert-level bilateral discussions, and explore additional options for increased cooperation.
In addition, the United States reaffirmed its 65-year-old commitment to the defense of Iceland, while Iceland agreed to continue allowing the United States and NATO to use Icelandic facilities in order to reinforce mutual security.
